The task was to design a set of coherent icons to support internal Moodle branding. Icons were intended to be aligned with the overall ENU branding and their icon system style, yet unique and distinctive, and tailored for the platform.
The icon set was created in stages with detailed feedback from a client on icon usage and restrictions. The first version shows a general design idea in a monochromatic palette, the second version was an attempt to use colour. Version 3 shows how icons were pulled back to maintain more defined shapes. And then I was asked to redesign them to get closer to the original Moodle references (v4) and to introduce a bit of depth to increase contrast for accessibility (v5).

Overall look and feel and monochromatic palette. At this stage I worked without a complete brief. We wanted Moodle icons to stay on brand and coherent with the rest of the icon system I designed for the university.

Introducing colour coding. Colours were selected from the university's colour palette to help users read icons instantly.

Defining shapes and increasing the contrast. Overall Moodle's layout and desired size of the icons require more defined shapes and stronger contrast.

Redesigning symbols to align with existing Moodle icons. The client requested to align iconography with symbols previously used as they were already well-known to users.

Design process follows user needs. User needs: to help navigation and maintain familiarity. Stakeholder request: to keep brand consistency.

Adding depth to help reading symbols.

The whole Moodle icon set in two sizes.
